Yolanda Waters

Yolanda Waters is an environmental and marine social scientist, dive instructor, and founder of Divers for Climate. Yolanda’s PhD research explored the diverse connections between people and the ocean, and whether these connections provide a unique pathway for engaging people with climate action. She is particularly interested in the effects of social and educational experiences above and below the water, and worked closely with divers and dive tourism operators throughout her work.

Yolanda’s passion for the ocean stems from being an avid diver since the age of 12, despite being scared of waves and fish at the time. The ocean is now the only place Yolanda feels comfortable calling home. Being underwater changed her perspective of the world and everything we have the responsibility to protect. Her passion for storytelling and science communication started during her undergraduate studies when she realised that global challenges such as climate change really all come down to the actions and decisions of people. Changing these actions and decisions for the better of the planet doesn’t come down to biology or physics, but powerful messages and stories that come from a place of respect and empathy.

The Undertow is an ocean media organisation with a commitment to ocean conservation and storytelling. Liv and Nicole are a dynamic and passionate team which drives them to combine their varied experiences and skills to create impactful, visually stunning media. By leveraging their expertise and passions, they aim to inspire change and to help foster a deep connection between people and the ocean.

Liv Slip is a skipper, marine biologist, dive instructor, drone pilot and photographer who plays a crucial role in The Undertow team. Her practical experience and hands-on knowledge of marine ecosystems shine through in all she does. With her keen eye for beauty and an innate understanding of the underwater world, Liv's imagery tells stories of the ocean's beauty and vulnerability.

Nicole McLachlan is an experienced marine naturalist, photographer, videographer, project manager and conservationist who adds a unique perspective to The Undertow team. Nicole has 15 years of experience in creating powerful visuals to highlight the conservation needs of marine ecosystems. Nicole's dedication to ocean conservation and her expertise in storytelling combine to create impactful media projects that drive positive change
