A new approach to addressing plastic pollution

Common Seas tackles plastic waste at its source, delivers new ways to manage and re-use plastic, and stops the leakage into our rivers, seas and ocean.

Plastic is now found in our planet’s wildest and most remote habitats. Evidence mounts of how it not only harms precious wildlife and damages ecosystems but permeates the food we eat and the air we breathe. Dedicated to exploring and catalysing solutions to protect the health of the ocean, Common Seas are transformational and rooted in discovery and evidence to stimulate smart solutions and drive action.

With roots in ocean exploration, design and policy - from building the first cradle to cradle sailing vessel to supporting UK Government Blue Belt commitment. Common Seas has always made smart interventions to find clever solutions to real problems, from equipping fishing vessels with clean tech to inspiring global business to commit to ambitious targets to reduce plastic pollution.

An ocean free from plastic is critical to our health and the health of our planet.

Common Seas work directly with partners on the ground, catalysing local, national and international solutions that will halt Ocean plastic and protect the future of life on Earth.

Matt Porteous had the pleasure of joining the team earlier this year, supporting the creation of the Namoona Baa programme and eco-centros on Maalhos, Dharavandhoo and Kihaadhoo in the Maldives. Part of the international Clean Blue Alliance (which supports islands in preventing plastic waste leaking into the ocean), it sets a sustainable course for Baa Atoll, and eventually the entire Maldives archipelago, to become a global leader in halting ocean plastic pollution.
