Alice Cimino | OceanKin Founder | United Kingdom

Alice’s passion for sharks began at a young age when her father gave her a book on the magnificent great white shark. Originally from Wales, U.K, Alice is now a biologist, shark advocate, naturalist and diver living in the UK and soon to be studying Marine Science at Swansea university.

After becoming aware of the horrific realities that sharks and the oceans are facing, she decided to channel her passion to create change & give a voice to those that need it most. On her first trip to witness the Indian Ocean Alice was alarmed by the sheer lack of marine megafauna, it was then she created OceanKin Conservation, a platform aiming to spread awareness & provide education.

What is a typical day like for you?

I’m currently gaining a degree in Marine Biology, so during term time I am at my computer attending lectures, writing essays and completing coursework. During my vacation time I can often be found diving with my camera in different places around the globe.

When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?

I started out with a GoPro years ago, but it wasn’t until last year I took the leap and bought myself a Sony camera and underwater housing from Nauticam. That is when everything changed and my passion for capturing life under the waves started to consume my mind.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

Family holidays to the beach in Pembrokeshire. I would spend every moment I possibly could in the water exploring, always with the hope I would come across a shark.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

It wasn’t typical. I was an actress for many years before I made the decision to follow my gut and pursue Marine Biology.

What do you value most in life?

My loved ones and my freedom. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for their unconditional support, especially through the hard times that we all have to face at some point in our lives.

What brings you the most joy?

Traveling, exploring, and obviously diving with marine life, especially sharks.

Who/what currently inspires you?

One of my biggest inspirations is Valerie Taylor. She is such a pioneer that paved the way for women in underwater photography and film. In general, the ocean inspires me, especially sharks and how I can use my creativity to aid in raising awareness for their protection.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

How sharks are treated & portrayed. They are my biggest driving force, if I can somehow help create positive change for these beautiful animals, I’ll die happy.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?

The obvious one is BBC documentaries which I grew up watching religiously. Other than that, I read a lot of books on marine life in general. One that’s opened my eyes a lot recently is Sharks of the Open Ocean. The information in there shows just how much sharks need protecting.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

One that inspires people to continue working to harmonize the relationship between the oceans, it’s inhabitants and humans. We are one, not separate entities and I think the more we realise that, the more chance we have of reversing the damage we’ve done.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
Listen to yourself, do what makes you happy & if you fail the first time keep going. If you have deep passions, follow them, your path will unfold as you go.
