Danielle Stanley | Marine Biologist | Ocean Photographer | Africa | Maldives

Danielle is a marine biologist currently working in the Maldives. She grew up and spent most of her life in Tanzania. A beautiful slice of East Africa, where her absolute love for the ocean and passion for marine conservation first started!

She combines her passion in ocean photography and scientific background, to spark interest in others to protect our oceans. Driven to make a positive difference above and below the surface for marine life and ecosystems.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

In October 2021.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

Sailing was a big part of growing up in Tanzania. Exploring different coral reefs and marine ecosystems, from a very young age, to watching how they changed over time. My love and respect for the ocean developed from this.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

Studying both Environmental Science and Marine Biology at University. Deep dive into marine conservation work experiences and now a Marine Biologist.

What/who currently inspires you?

Madison Stewart (@sharkgirlmadison) and Project Hiu.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

Real change should happen at the root of decision-making from those in power, to define a sustainable connection between people and the ocean. Stabilize our climate, reduce destructive activities and stop wildlife exploitation with equitable participation to help protect our oceans.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

I would recommend tuning into Project Hiu podcasts and reading Sea Change: A message of the Oceans by Sylvia Earle.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

I hope to create a safe space for the ocean by inspiring people how to love and respect her. Creating real change and action for younger generations faced with environmental debt.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Apply your strengths and passion to what you do. Start local, celebrate the small wins, and work your way up. Positive actions towards conservation efforts, no matter how small, can make a big difference.

Current Projects

An exciting project in the works is to create an underwater ‘museum’ that will essentially be a coral garden made out of cement structures - using both creative designs to rebuild the reef and underwater instillations, similar to an art exhibition, besides the positive impacts on the reef, this is to create awareness and spark positive change in coral restoration efforts here in the Maldives.
