Diego Leandro Genna | Diving Instructor | Underwater Photographer | Italy

Diego Leandro Genna is a diving instructor and underwater explorer. He is extremely passionate about marine biology and underwater photography, spending most of his time immersed in the ocean, somewhere in the world. Diego is also a talented author, and has published several short stories online.

Currently, Diego is working hard to promote his book "NATURA CORTA", with tours in various bookstores and cultural centres in Italy. At the same time, when he can, he dedicates himself to his passion as a freelance underwater photographer.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

I started in 2019.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

The thousands of hours I spent underwater, in the ocean, in its immense and vibrant beauty, and the direct contact with the splendid creatures that inhabit the sea.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I got my diving instructor license and I started working in different parts of the world. I was moved by my passion for marine biology and underwater photography. I have organised workshops, trips and expeditions, to study, learn and discover more and more wonders of the underwater world.

Who/what currently inspires you?

The need for awareness and respect for nature and our planet.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

Indifference, ambition, selfishness, the lack of alternatives for a model of development and a society that is destroying itself.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

  • Other Minds by Peter Godfrey-Smith

  • Art forms of Nature by Ernst Haeckel

  • The Long Way by Bernard Moitessier

What legacy do you hope to leave?

Greater awareness of the fact, that we humans are not the only ones who have the right to inhabit this planet. Among the innumerable risks, there would be the unsustainable one of feeling alone.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Studying, reading, learning from others, working, not giving up in the face of difficulty, and trying to make every effort to achieve their aspirations and make their dreams come true.
