Jasmine Corbett | Natural History Photographer | Marine Biologist | UK

Natural history photographer and marine biologist, Jasmine Corbett, specialises in documenting the underwater world. With a fascination and respect for marine species and the habitats they reside in, she aims to inspire and educate viewers through visual storytelling.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

I first picked up a camera when I was 10 years old. I used to shoot in film and loved spending time in the dark room experimenting with the equipment. I started shooting underwater when I was 18 and have never looked back. It has become such an essential tool in my daily research.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I studied a degree in marine and natural history photography, as I had a passion for science communication. After graduating I gained further experience in marine science and all of the jobs I have done since have combined both of these fields.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

My mum, who is an artist. I would spend hours on the beach whilst I was growing up; she would be arranging and photographing shells, whilst I would be sketching and painting things that I saw on the beach. I became obsessed with spending time in and around the ocean, and this was the only place I truly felt at peace. I knew from an early age that I wanted to work in an ocean related field.

Who/what currently inspires you?

The photographers that inspire me most are those who are also marine biologists and conservationists, those who understand every single detail about the subject they are photographing. It makes such a difference in terms of the emotion that is communicated in their work. Some of my personal favourites are Cristina Mittermeier, Alex Mustard, and Alex Kydd.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

The inclusion of natural history and conservation in all core curriculums in schools. Education is the key to making any positive change for the environment, so this is the first step.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

I hope that my work and creative output inspires people to spend more time in the ocean, to respect nature, and inspires people to want to protect it.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?

If you are passionate about communicating ocean stories, don't let a lack of experience hold you back. Online tutorials, online forums, creative communities...there is so much valuable information available online to help develop your skills!
