Kate Jonker | Diver | Ocean Photographer | Writer | UK | South Africa

Kate is an underwater photographer and writer based in Cape Town, South Africa. She is incredibly passionate about sharing the beauty of our oceans through photography and storytelling.

Kate is originally from the UK but has lived in South Africa most of her life. She lives in a little seaside village called Gordon's Bay, a 45-minute drive from the centre of Cape Town.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

I started my journey in 2015.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

My love of the ocean began from a very early age. My grandmother was a great adventurer and I spent many hours snorkeling with her along the South African coastline. I remember one day, we were exploring a little cove and I looked down and saw five little hammerhead sharks swimming around. I was probably 10 at the time and was not scared at all, just absolutely amazed. Since then, I have always wanted to explore more and discover more that the ocean has to offer.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

After leaving school, I studied visual communications and after graduating, took up a job with a TV Company in the UK. Shortly after that, I returned to South Africa and realised my dream of becoming a scuba diver. I met my husband whilst learning to dive and we started our own scuba diving business in Gordon's Bay.

What/who currently inspires you?

The natural beauty of the ocean is an inspiration for my photography and writing, and creating content that resonates with my audience is a powerful motivator for improving my craft.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

I believe we can all play a part in the preservation of our oceans - no matter how large or how small. As an underwater photographer, what I would like to see is all underwater photographers being cognizant of the ocean and its inhabitants by practicing responsible diving and photography. This includes not touching or damaging reefs or moving or harassing subjects for the sake of a photo.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

Definitely the Blue Planet series!

What legacy do you hope to leave?

I hope to leave a legacy of considerate divers and underwater photographers who use their underwater photography to create an awareness of not only the beauty, but the plight of our oceans too.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Start today regardless of what camera you haveโ€ฆ Tell the story through your lense and learn how to capture what you see in your own unique way. Document, document, document. Take photos, be inquisitive, ask questions. It is not easy, but if you have the passion, don't give up!
