Mohamed Magdy | Engineer | United Kingdom | Egypt
Part time photographer, full time engineer, and life-long nature lover, Magdy has been an ocean advocate for many years now. His photography takes a different perspective to capture beautiful scenery, which Magdy then shares on his social media platforms to inspire people to protect that which doesn’t have a voice: nature.
What is a typical day like for you?
Engineer on weekdays, photographer on weekends and holidays.
When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?
It would have to be back in 2012 when I went on my first diving trip. It was a disposable one at the time, but I just had to capture those moments as I knew they would turn into a life-long passion.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
I was naturally very drawn to the outside world, and as I grew up, I became more and more curious about how it all worked and functioned. This thirst for knowledge lead me into the science field, to better understand it all. Additionally, I spent endless hours in complete awe and inspiration watching nature documentaries (Sir David of course!) until it all clicked… my dream was to travel, film and capture the worlds beauty and share it with everyone.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
Industrial Engineering and Management.
What do you value most in life?
Respect. Respect for people, respect for cultures, respect for the planet, respect for the wildlife.
What brings you the most joy?
Filming/taking pictures around wildlife, of course!
Who/what currently inspires you?
Brian Skerry, and Sir David Attenborough.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
How we treat and percieve the oceans. Due to the fact that it’s such a vast part of the planet (and most of it is hidden), it’s difficult for people to grasp the idea that its in danger.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?
‘Planet Earth’, ‘Blue Planet’, ‘Breaking boundaries’, ‘Our Planet’ and others.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
I want to inspire others to be kinder to themselves, other humans and wildlife.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
Go into the ocean as much as you can, even if it’s the same spot. It’s such a dynamic and active environment, that you could have very different experiences and encounters in the same place. Now imagine going into its different ecosystems (shallow waters, Kelp forests, open oceans, shipwrecks, coral reefs etc...) there are endless stories to tell so just start doing!
