Patrick Uramowski | Underwater Photographer | Freediver | Australia

Patrick is a passionate photographer and ocean Lover. This passion started from his spearfishing background, which then quickly evolved into freediving and capturing the beauty that mother nature has to offer underwater.

Most of Patrick’s photography that he captures are for pleasure, and to share with others to inspire them.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

My early experiences in the water were when I was spearfishing off the coast of Sydney. I wanted to share my excitement about finding underwater life and my experiences there with friends. I loved to relive those moments, like finding bait balls and large fish. Since then, I have swapped the spear gun for an underwater housing and embarked on a journey of underwater photography.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

I have always loved nature documentaries. Sir David Attenborough was my favourite. I haven't always lived by the ocean, but I was always drawn to it.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

My profession started with construction and custom joinery, but my passions lay with landscape and ocean photography.

What/who currently inspires you?

Many of my close friends also enjoy freediving and ocean photography, which inspires me to spend more time in the water and share those experiences with them. The community in Sydney is very passionate about conservation and portraying the beauty of the underwater world.

I also love seeing other photographers’ captures from around the world, which drives me to want to explore more of it. The photos captured are also a humble reminder of how vast and incredible the oceans are.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

Increase education against the cruelty shown to the natural world. The vast amounts of pollution which enter the oceans each day, the shark nets which affect marine life off the coast of Australia, and the overfishing which burdens the natural balance, just to name a few.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

Inspire others to respect and admire the ocean.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Find a good network of friends, never dive alone, and go out and enjoy the natural beauty of the ocean.
