Steve Tay | PADI Diver | Underwater Photographer | Malaysia

Malaysian-born Steve Tay is a true Thalassophile, combining his love for scuba diving and underwater photography which he continues sharing the “Stories Through the Lens” in his journey.

Steve’s impressive professional camera set-up allows him to tell stories through lens, capture all variety of scale from Wide to Macro that help to set the ocean scene, introduce the characters, see some of the specific parts of the story and sum up the experiences.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

Emerged from my first dive triumphant in 2012 with a newfound trust in the ocean and in myself.

The freedom was intoxicating.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

I found myself standing at the end of the boat, facing the open water, which was my biggest nightmare. In fact, I was afraid of deep water. But I’ve jumped in anyway and since then I've fallen in love with the underwater world. Scuba Diving has changed the rest of my life.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I’ve started my career in various online industries and landed into the corporate world now.

What/who currently inspires you?

Nature - feeling the warm breeze, the salty air and the splashes of seawater. There has to be magic in the waters and I always wonder what’s down there.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

As divers, we have a unique connection to the underwater world, witnessing its beauty firsthand and understanding the importance of its preservation. Ready to step up, help save the ocean, and “Dive for a Cause” at the same time!

What legacy do you hope to leave?

Immense a value in protecting marine life, habitats and ecosystems. By “taking only photos,” “respecting wildlife,” and by “becoming a citizen scientist,” you can actively contribute to the conservation of our underwater world.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Stories are the fabric of our lives. We tell these stories in a variety of different ways. Tell your stories connected through the photograph and hope it allows the viewer to connect and be inspired by the subject.
