David Alphonso | Underwater Photographer | UK | Australia

David is from a little town in England called Northampton, but for the last 9 years, he has been in Australia - firstly in Sydney, and now David is based in Western Australia.

David said he was always fascinated with the natural world and grew up watching David Attenborough documentaries in England, but he was always drawn to the ocean side more than the land documentaries.

Since living in Australia, David has finally felt at home living near the ocean, where he captures his favourite moments.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

About 7 years ago I started freediving at Cabbage Tree Bay aquatic reserve in NSW Australia, to look at all the amazing sea life. I bought myself a GoPro and then a drone to capture it from in the water and above. I’ve always preferred being in the ocean and amongst the sea life more though.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I became a qualified Electrician.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

Not growing up near the ocean, some of my best memories were sitting down with my family back in England to watch an ocean documentary. I always felt the pull to move closer to the ocean so I could experience it more.

What/who currently inspires you?

Some amazing accounts on Instagram namely Jake Wilton (@jakewiltonphoto) and Lewis Burnett (@huntingforparadise) and even my mate Rowan Dear (@rdearphotography), but still, there are too many amazing accounts to name!

What would you most like to change in the world or environment today?

I would love to change the lack of respect and interest I feel a lot of the world still has for the ocean and the natural world. Also to empty the tanks with sea life in worldwide!

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

You can go wrong with any of the BBC documentaries, especially the Blue Planet Series!

What legacy do you hope to leave?

A love , care and total amazement of the ocean and all the wonderful things living in it!

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Get out and explore! Dive into the ocean and start photographing what you see and love!
