Matthew David Kaplan | Underwater Photographer & Filmmaker

Matthew Kaplan has a passion for Ocean storytelling and conservation. Currently working in the finance sector in Amsterdam, he spends his time travelling, diving, and filming as much as possible. When speaking with Matthew he told us about his hopes for the future of technology and marine conservation. Although his work as a Portfolio Manager isn't directly connected to the ocean, Matthew uses his position to inspire his co-workers and create change within his industry. Business leadership can create a big difference for the ocean community and Matthew’s intrinsic love for the sea is leading the path for conservation.

“Being able to often work remotely enables me to make both "jobs" cornerstones of my life.”

Last month he spent some time with OCL Storyteller Jay Clue, working together to explore the epic coast of Baja, Mexico.

What is a typical day like for you?

When I'm in Amsterdam, a typical day involves multiple cups of pour over V60 coffee, investment meetings and financial research, bike rides along the canals, video editing and storytelling, playtime with my cats, and preparations for my next dive trip! When I'm travelling, it's about being on the water and in the water as much as possible :-)

What/who currently inspires you?

Shawn Heinrichs is a hero of mine - he is an incredible leader in our community of ocean activists. He always has a smile on his face, a positive attitude, and brings people together in our common purpose of conserving, restoring, and protecting our ocean and our planet. I am also inspired by Jesse Driftwood and Daniel Schiffer who have shown what is possible in the world of video editing and have taught me new techniques to tell stories.

What do you value most in life?

Family and friends. I believe the purpose of life is to make close connections with other humans and to love, support, and help each other. I am incredibly grateful for my friends, including all of my new friends I have made in recent years within the ocean community.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

Top of my list is the creation of more marine sanctuaries where fishing is not permitted. This is a critical solution to restoring marine life and the ocean to optimal health in addition to ultimately providing more fish for everyone to eat, sustainably. We also need to transition off carbon-based energy to renewable sources as quickly as possible. I am hopeful that technology in the coming years will enable us to reduce the levels of carbon in the atmosphere and not only stop, but also reverse climate change. Never underestimate the potential of technology - we can't imagine today what we can't imagine.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?

I highly recommend The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer to all humans. You don't need to agree with all of his ideas in order to find ideas that will help you in daily life.

What brings you the most joy?

We spend hours and days on the ocean and underwater for those unforgettable encounters - those are the moments that make us come alive, those are the moments I live for!
