World Ocean Day 2022.

This year we set out with the intention of creating our biggest and best World Ocean Day celebration to date. Needless to say with the support of our community, sponsors, and friends within the ocean space, we certainly pulled it off….

We kicked off the month of June by launching our island-wide month-long photography exhibition, showcasing stories from around the world, shining a light on those working tirelessly to give a voice to our most undervalued resource.

The purpose of this was to celebrate and share those who are working to protect and preserve the ocean for future generations. Raising awareness of these organisations and individuals and encouraging our local community to be actively following their efforts.

At Ocean Culture Life, we believe in collaboration over competition. Collectively our voices can be heard and we can do more to protect our oceans.

We’d like to thank our official partners Mourant, a law firm-led professional services business who have  made this exhibition possible. We’ve been working behind the scenes with the firm’s Environment & Sustainability Employee-led Network to develop their Ocean Pledge which demonstrates their commitment not only on World Ocean Day but the months and years ahead. Read more here.

Our World Ocean Day 2022 celebrations commenced on Saturday, where we joined up with local beach cafe β€˜Nude Food’ for a family-fun filled day of celebrations. We began with tranquil morning yoga on the beach with Claire O’Brien, followed by a nutritious smoothie bowl supplied by Nude Food, and a talk from OCL co-founder Tamsin Raine, and special guest, TV Personality, Science Communicator, Ocean Advocate, and OCL Guardian, Danni Washington.

The day continued with kids and adults delighting in some beach themed arts and crafts, chilling out to some summery tunes with our live DJ, and marvelling at beautiful ocean captures by our very own OCL Storytellers.

Arguably one of the most important part of our week-long celebrations was having local school join us at the seaside to learn and explore in our WOD storytelling workshops. Our workshops were designed to motivate, information and inspire the younger generation by offering a fun, interactive way to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it.

The children also learnt about the importance of bridging the gap between science and communication with Women in Ocean Science, and about harmful water pollutants and how to build water filters alongside @jerseywaterofficial and @governmentofjersey.

On our third day of celebrations, we went live to hundreds of children across over 30 schools celebrating World Ocean Day. The virtual workshop involved participation from schools and allowed pupils who were unable to attend the in-person event the opportunity to ask our guest marine scientists, water specialists and storytellers questions.

We capped off our celebrations with a beautiful evening on the beach as the tide came up alongside our partners at Mourant. Alongside a delicious, sustainable and locally sourced meal prepared by the Nude Food staff, paired with some amazing Ocean Beer and Hidden Sea Wine, we heard from ocean guardians Common Seas, @bluemarinefoundation, and Women in Ocean Science, who each communicated the importance of their work, inspired our guests, and gave insight to the local Community.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s event. Events like these are vital in raising awareness and encouraging more to join the fight for climate action. With your help we were able to celebrate and share those who are working to protect and preserve the ocean for future generations.

During all of our events and happenings we constantly strive to give a voice to the ocean and support those who work tirelessly to protect our most undervalued resource. By supporting organisations like OCL, you are playing a role in stemming the tide on the destruction of our oceans. The ocean needs a voice, and we need you.
