Freija Mendrik | Marine Scientist | NatGeo Explorer | Ocean Advocate | UK

Freija is a National Geographic Explorer, a marine scientist and a postdoctoral research associate at the Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull. Her Ph. D. research explored the transport and ecological risk of microplastics in aquatic environments.

With her knowledge, Freija loves to share her ocean stories, news, and advocacy through her photographs and positive movements in the ocean-world.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

I was very fortunate to grow up on the Jurassic Coast of Devon with a mum who loves the ocean. We would spend hours and hours rockpooling, beachcombing and fossil hunting. I wanted to be in the water as much as possible! I was fascinated that there was a whole other world out there beneath the waves and always wanted to learn more. It wasn’t a surprise that I went on to pursue a career in marine biology.

What/who currently inspires you?

The number of people coming together to protect nature and pushing for change! There are so many inspiring people, too many to name but here are a few: Asha de Vos, Mikaela Loach, and Sylvia Earle.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I went straight to University to study marine biology but after that, I felt a bit lost. I realised that I had a passion for research which has led me to complete a PhD and I am now researching how microplastics are impacting corals in Southeast Asia. But I also love to share science in many different ways through social media, art, and film.

What do you value most in life?

Spending time with friends and family.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

An end to overexploitation and an increase everybody’s connection with nature.

What brings you the most joy?

Being in and on the ocean, learning, and working with others.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams?

Be patient and work hard. Grades aren’t everything. Trust your gut. Push yourself but also recognise that rest is important.

Try as many different things as you can and put yourself out there even if you don’t feel confident!

Talk to people from different backgrounds and disciplines, share ideas and work together.
