Scuba Junkie SEAS

Scuba Junkie SEAS is a not-for-profit marine conservation organisation based in Malaysia. Scuba Junkie SEAS was started by the owners of Scuba Junkie in order to try and make Semporna a shark sanctuary as sharks were being caught in this area for their fins. Since then it has grown and developed to deal with the issues facing Mabul Island.

What Scuba Junkie SEAS Hopes to Change in the World

People's understanding of their impact on the planet in the hope it would make them change their behaviour in a way which was beneficial to all creatures living on this earth.

Scuba Junkie SEAS believe that the only way to achieve its aim of protecting the marine environment is through education and working with the local community so they support the projects Scuba Junkie SEAS are working on. The new generation has the power to change the path this planet is on, and it’s important to help guide them in this as well as take actual action on the ground, which in this case is Mabul Island.

Scuba Junkie SEAS’ Legacy

The creation of a working partnership between the community and the tourism industry, resulting in sustainable tourism and living on Mabul Island. This would allow us to live in harmony with the island and the marine environment around.

Turtle Hatchery Project

We have the Mabul Turtle Hatchery! When a member of the local community sees a turtle laying their eggs on the beach they come and inform us. An Honorary Wildlife Warden then goes out to observe the nesting.

Once the turtle had finished we relocate the eggs to our hatchery where they are kept safe until they hatch.

When they hatch our guests are invited to come and see them being released into the wild. The member of the local community who informed us about the nest is given a reward for the information.

To date, (Sept 2022) we have released over 17,000 baby turtles since the hatchery was established in 2011.

Beach Cleans

We conduct regular beach and reef cleans in order to help with the trash problem on Mabul as well educating the local community about the problems the trash can create.

Coral Conservation & Restoration

We also undertake coral conservation with one coral garden already operational and plans to start planting new garden areas soon.
