Aimee Jan | Photographer | West Australia

Living near the Ningaloo Reef, Aimee spends most of her time enjoying the ocean life. Working as a photographer for local Whale Shark and Humpback Whale tours, Aimee hopes to inspire people to look after the ocean by taking people out to experience it and educating them about it. She uses her photography to reach a wider audience and even sells her own sustainable jewellery made from 100% recycled silver and gold and recycled wetsuits.

What is a typical day like for you?

For 8 months of the year I work on Whale Shark/Humpback Whale tours. We start our day with a snorkel on the reef and then we go out to find whalesharks etc. After that we have another snorkel and then I spend my evenings editing the photos I have taken.

When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?

About 16 years ago I bought an Olympus Tough and used it when I was on holidays snorkelling.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

Watching Wildlife documentaries, especially ones including whales, and spending summers out at a friends holiday home, swimming and being on the boat. I grew up next to the ocean and I feel so incredibly lucky to have had parents that encouraged me to swim all the time.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I chose to move overseas to Australia where I started surfing, snorkelling, and diving. I fell in love with it all and have been over here ever since.

What do you value most in life?

My family, friends, and wildlife.

What brings you the most joy?

Swimming with Whales!

Who/what currently inspires you?

I have recently been involved in a print sale which included 100 photographers from around the world and all profits go to conservation. As part of that, we got to have a zoom meeting with Jane Goodall and she is so incredibly inspiring… so currently I would have to say her! :)

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

I would like to change a lot of peoples views. I think if more people cared about our wildlife, oceans, and nature they would make better decisions.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?

All of Sir David Attenboroughs Documentaries!

What legacy do you hope to leave?

I hope people look at my photos forever and think about how incredible wildlife is, how important it is, and how we all must look after it.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
Don’t give up! Find a way to spend as much time in and around the ocean as possible and always respect the animals.
