Phill Boyd | Photographer | Surfer | North Wales

Phill Boyd is a talented Photographer and Chef, currently living on the Llyn peninsula in North Wales, UK. Drawn here following childhood holidays that ignited his passion, first for the sea and then for visual art, he has made it his home and his canvas.

β€œHis passion for photography combined with his long-standing adoration for the area quite clearly seeps into every image. Capturing the true essence of the area, Phill’s talents as a photographer shine through in each and every image - undoubtedly, one of the main reasons why his photos are so loved.” - Abersoch Life Magazine

What is a typical day like for you?

I am the head chef in a restaurant in Abersoch, so spare time is limited but I spend every minute I can, surfing, photographing surfers or my family in and around the ocean. I am so lucky to have it on my doorstep.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

Like many others, I wasn’t brought up by the sea but spent family holidays on the coast. We would spend the whole day on the beach swimming, surfing, fishing. That feeling of leaving the beach after a long day with sun kissed skin and salty hair is my fondest memory. So much so that I moved here.

What/who currently inspires you?

Unbelievable ocean imagery inspires me everyday. Particularly surf/sea-life photographers such as Ben Thouard, Matty Smith, Chris Burkard, Russel Ord.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

Left school and went straight into catering. Still in it to this day. Started photography when I was 23. In the last 5 years my photography has started to gain recognition which will hopefully be the next chapter of my career.

What do you value most in life?

Family, friends and the ocean.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

Plastic pollution and climate change really scares me.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?

David Attenborough documentaries.

What brings you the most joy?

Being able to swim in the sea everyday. Photographing family and friends in the ocean.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

I would like to push my photography boundaries and hope to raise awareness of the unseen beauty below the surface of the sea but also damage caused by plastic pollution.
