Richard Picot | Surfer | Ocean & Nature Photographer | Jersey | UK

Richard is known for his wide and varied interests, forged through travel within Asia, the Pacific Isles, and Latin America to influence the breadth of his stunning portfolio. His work has been selected for exhibition by renowned curators, featured in national magazines and the press, and won two golds and a silver at the New York Photography Awards 2022/23.

Richard is a firm believer that it is not the destination that matters, but the story of the journey that counts. This is proven in Richard’s talented coastline captures, from epic surf-worthy waves to nature that lives in and around the ocean.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

I properly started when I took a sabbatical back in 2018 and went travelling. I had always had an interest in photography, but never took it too seriously. So I used the opportunity to upgrade my camera and lenses while also upgrading my GoPro.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I was pretty sporty at school and really loved Art. As I did alright academically, I decided to attend university where I studied Sports Science. This led to me pursuing a career in education, teaching PE (amongst other subjects).

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

I grew up a stone’s throw from our Grandparents’ farm and often we would help out in the fields in our early years and into our teens. Our parents always encouraged us to be active and enjoy the outdoors, so on weekends and in the summer evenings my brother, our mates, and I would usually be building tree houses, riding our bikes along the cliffs, or rock jumping. We all loved to body surf and boogie board, which later evolved into a love for surfing.

What/who currently inspires you?

  • Paul Nicklen

  • Jimmy Chinn

  • Ben Thouard

  • Clark Little

What projects/stories are you currently working on?

The winter months can be pretty bleak here at times, but there are those crisp serene days too. I'm hoping to spend time exploring both sides of the water.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

The sense of helplessness. The defeatists’ attitude is that we are powerless to affect positive change in our day-to-day lives. Start with the little things, building to the more grandiose should you wish. Watch the ripple spread.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

It's reasonably old now but, 'Sharkwater' sadly remains just as relevant today as it did on its release. More recently I was introduced to 'Kiss the Ground' which I found quite fascinating.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

My two children. I hope they are kind, gracious, and compassionate. I hope they live a happy and fulfilled life.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Invest in the tools (and in yourself) that help you realise your goals and dreams.
